1. GENERAL READING Students are advised to begin by reading the set text by Judith Brown. Woodruffs, The Men Who Ruled India, vol.1, and Hutchins', The Illusion of Permanence, both out of print, are also useful texts for the beginning of the unit. 2. BIBLIOGRAPHY A selective bibliography of Dixson Library holdings, together with call numbers, is provided in Book 2. This can be used in conjunction with the reading lists attached to each essay/tutorial topic. 3. ESSAYS (Pink Pages) The unit consists of 10 Topics. A separate essay question is attached to each topic. * There is a reading list provided for each essay question, but it is not comprehensive and ought to be used in conjunction with the bibliography provided in Book 2. Where the lists look long, how much should you read? Enough to approach a clear understanding of the problem being studied, and to provide evidence to support you conclusions, or illustrate your questions in tutorials. Remember many books are relevant only in parts and need selective reading if you are to work effectively. 4. EXAM There will be a question in the exam on each tutorial and essay theme. That is to say there will be 10 questions in the 2 hour paper. You will be asked to answer 3 questions in all. There is no bar to you answering a question the general area in which you have already written an essay. There will be no residential school in this unit in 2000 |
