Section
298
of the Crimes Act 1961 provides that wilful damage to
property located in New Zealand, which includes wilful damage
to intangible property such as information or data stored
in a computer system in New Zealand, is a criminal offence.
Any person who commits or attempts to commit an offence
under section 298 of the Crimes Act 1961 is liable to imprisonment
for a term not exceeding 7 years.
According
to the United
States Department of State and Amnesty
International, the Maldives National Security Service
(NSS) has engaged in human rights violations. It is possible
that some such documented cases come within the definition
of crimes against humanity. So far, there is no documented
evidence of any criminal activity by the NSS within the
sovereign jurisdiction of another State.
