The Patrician Roman's DBA Camp

I had previously constructed a Roman marching camp as a DBA camp. I wanted something different this time. In Wargames Illustrated No. 153 there were pictures of a Punic Wars game complete with a number of Roman villas. This inspired me and you can see the finished camp is below.

Materials

5mm Foamcore card
Cork tile
Ribbed dowelling (in this case 10mm dia)
Balsa wood
Embossed plasticard (to represent the roof tiles)
Ready mixed plaster and paints
PVA glue

Method

Construction

    1. Using the cork tile as the camp's base, cut out the maximum size permitted (in this case 180mm x 120mm).
    2. Next, six pieces of foamcore card are required. These six pieces are needed for the front courtyard walls, the side walls, the back wall and the front wall of the villa proper. The measurements that I used are not important. Just work out something that looks right to you. As an indication, the courtyard walls are 50mm high, the rear wall is 80mm high and the front wall of the villa is 70mm high. Don't forget these measurements are for 25mm figures.
    3. To represent the columns I used ribbed dowelling. I cut four pieces, each 40mm long.
    4. Seal the foamcard with an even coverage of PVA glue. Now cover the walls in a thin plaster wash. This will soften the edges of the foamcard and also add some texture to the walls. By the way I mixed some yellow ochre poster paint into the plaster mix.
    5. I used balsa wood for the courtyard gates and the villa's door. The roofing was attached after the painting was completed

Painting and Finishing

    1. As the walls were already base coated with yellow ochre all I had to do was drybrush the walls with Citadel's Bleached Bone. The gates were base coated black and then progressively drybrushed with lighter shades of grey and finally finishing with a very light drybrush using white.
    2. The columns and pedestals were base coated with Citadel's Vomit Brown, then washed with Flesh Wash and then a final drybrush with Bleached Bone.
    3. The roof tiles were given a thin was of black to remove the as new shine.
I hope that you like the finished product. For more images of the completed camp click here.
