COLDEST OCTOBER MORNING FOR 6 YEARS - October 17th - As a result of cool southerly winds over the region on the
16th and a calm clear night, the temperature dropped to an unusually chilly -3.1C

temperature since October 12th 2003 (-3.5C).
DUST HAZE - October 13th/14th - In a repeat of conditions in late
September, once again strong westerly winds carried large quantities of fine
brown dust across northern NSW from areas in the west. The dust arrived in
Armidale from around noon on Tuesday October 13th with visibility reduced to
less than ten kilometers in the afternoon. The dust thickened overnight with
visibility down to five kilometres at 9am on Wednesday the 14th. It cleared
later in the afternoon. This now makes four days of dust in Armidale in 2009.
SEPTEMBER RAINFALL TOTAL: 33.4 mm on
4 days. This was 18 mm less than the average with the rain falling in just two events

thick brown dust. Horizontal visibility was 300 metres at 7am and gradually

drop below two kilometres.

normal this year. Full details here.

half the average with the majority of the rain (18.0 mm) falling over the
weekend of the 29th & 30th. Full details in the August 2009 Weather Review here.
RECORD AUGUST HEAT - August 23rd/24th - As
very warm air moved over this region from the centre of the continent
preceding a cool change, temperatures in Armidale soared to reach record high
levels for the month of August. The maximum on the 23rd was 25.5C which
was a new record, but the following day this was surpassed with a maximum of 27.4C.
These temperatures are in the summer range and were the highest on record for
August from 101 years of records. The previous highest was 25.2C on August 19th
1995.
As the warm air lingered overnight, the minimum temperature the following
