ABOUT
WOOLBROOK'S WEATHER
Woolbrook
has the distinction of occasionally recording the lowest daily minimum
temperature in New South Wales. When there is cloud over the
southern tablelands, the lowest temperatures usually occur on the northern
tablelands. When this happens Glen Innes Airport and Woolbrook
are most often the contenders for the coldest. Why then does Woolbrook at a slightly lower elevation than Armidale, Guyra and Glen Innes record such low temperatures?
The village is located in the valley of the McDonald River surrounded by the hills of the Moonbi Range. During calm clear nights cold
dense air which has been chilled by contact with the ground drains down the
slopes of these hills to accumulate in the valley making the valley colder than
nearby higher areas. This is known as a temperature inversion and is common in
this region, particularly at nearby Walcha and
Armidale. The effect is very pronounced at Woolbrook
which at times records temperatures lower than -10C. The lowest on record at Woolbrook was -14.5C on June 19th, 1994.
