LATEST NEWS:
COLD OUTBREAK WITH POSSIBLE SNOW - A strong cold front will move across this region
on Saturday night May 17th bringing showers with it. Colder air will arrive
immediately after the front triggering snowfalls on the higher parts of the
Northern Tablelands on Sunday. Guyra will almost
certainly receive some snow, and there is a chance Armidale may see some light
snowfalls also.
NEXT RAIN - Showers are likely from today through to Monday May 19th.
APRIL RAINFALL TOTAL was 54.6 mm on 11 days – 10 mm higher than the average.
The highest fall was 20 mm from an afternoon thunderstorm on the 21st. Detailed
April 2008 weather review here.
RECORD
COLD APRIL MORNING - Wednesday April 30th - The minimum of -5.8C was a new
record low for April at the present site (previous lowest -5.0C in 1982 and
2004). A comparison with old post office records suggests that it was the
coldest April temp for 97 years since April 27th 1911 when the minimum was
approx. -6.0C allowing for site adjustment.
COLD SNAP - Monday April 28th - An intense cold front which brought snow to the
southern and central tablelands, produced strong winds and low temperatures in
Armidale. The maximum of just 11.9C was the lowest April maximum since 1996.
FIRST
FROST OF THE YEAR
COOLEST SUMMER FOR 24 YEARS - Low day temperatures, high rainfall
and very few sunny days resulted in the summer of 2008 being the coolest since
1983/84. Detailed summer weather review here.

Winter still
hasn't quite arrived in May. The cool to mild autumn "golden days"
continue, but nights are getting that real winter chill as the frost season
sets in. Morning fogs are also likely, but are usually followed by pleasant
sunny days. A cold snap may plunge us into winter conditions for a few days
before becoming milder again. Winds are light westerlies,
and rainfall is sporadic and light - May is normally the driest month of the
year.
Very occasionally it snows in May. The last May snowfalls were in 2000 when
there were light snowfalls on the 29th and 30th.
